The Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences is one of Poland's leading scientific units. Its uniqueness in Europe and the world is its activities at the interface of three sciences: chemistry, biology and computer science. Interdisciplinary research is carried out here, covering such fields as bioorganic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, systems biology, synthetic biology and bioinformatics, in particular, research on the synthesis, structure and function of nucleic acids and proteins and their components, as well as on their interactions under model and cellular conditions. The nucleus of the Institute was the Department of Stereochemistry of Natural Products of the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, established in 1969, which was transformed in 1980 into an independent Department of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and then, in 1988, into the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
